Ontario Supporting Auto Manufacturing Workers

Summary

Today, Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development was joined by Christine Hogarth MPP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore and Kinga Surma MPP for Etobicoke Centre to announce our government is investing $7 million to deliver training and paid job placements in the automotive manufacturing sector for up to 800 people from underrepresented groups. As part of Ontario’s $115 million Skills Development Fund, this new program, led by the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association (APMA), will help develop a new talent pipeline to reinvigorate a sector with an aging workforce and help historically marginalized groups to train for, access, and retain good jobs.

Key Messages

·       Our government is committed to making Ontario’s automotive sector, once again, become one of the most competitive in the world.

·       That’s why our government is investing $7 million to deliver training and paid job placements for up to 800 people from underrepresented groups.

·       This project, led by the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association (APMA), will help develop a new talent pipeline to reinvigorate a sector with an aging workforce and help historically marginalized groups to train for, access, and retain good jobs

·       With most workers over the age of 45 and thousands of opening across the province, our investment will help reinvigorate the automotive sector with the fresh talent they need to grow, become more competitive and produce their products at full capacity.

·       This will energize our economy, workforce and, just as importantly, create great, local jobs that make our communities stronger.
