Human Trafficking Awareness Day

Today, February 22 is Human Trafficking Awareness Day in Ontario and across Canada. Human trafficking is serious problem that is occurring in all our of communities and ridings. Traffickers predominantly go after young women, although it can happen to anyone. The average age of recruitment is just 13 years old!

Traffickers will often lure children into an emotional bond and groom them before sexually exploiting them. This luring can be playing the role of a significant other, being a friend during a hard time or buying them lots of gifts.

In November, Premier Ford announced that Minister Dunlop and Solicitor General Jones would be co-leading the new, cross-government strategy to combat human trafficking in Ontario. They also announced $20 million in annualized funding for survivor supports and enhanced policing.
